Best Thai Restaurants in Ubud

2  Bulan – Thai Bistro & Natural Wines

Why do we love it?

From the first look, there seems to be nothing Thai about 2 Bulan. There are no bright or tacky colors, or stereotypical murals that are found in almost all Thai restaurants outside of the country. It’s not loud, it’s not trying to fit into a mold of what a Thai restaurant should be. At the same time, it is very Thai, and slowly becoming one of the best Thai restaurants in Ubud. The decor will remind you of the rustic ceramic factories of Northern Thailand that is tastefully blended with figurative art. There is an open kitchen where you can catch in on all the cooking and swearing. As for the food – it is bold, it is unapologetic, it is Thai without the cliches of Thai food. The curry pastes are made in-house, the noodles from scratch. You see a traditional Som Tam being ordered along with a Green Curry Ricotta stuffed chilli peppers (somewhat Thai as they call it). There is a natural wine list that is approachable and we suggest you try a bottle sitting outdoors overlooking the park in the charming Nyuh Kuning neighbourhood.

What to order?

The pad kra pao (pork basil stir fry) and pad kee mao (beef noodles) are the standout dishes! The surprise pick was the Wagyu Ribeye with Massaman Curry butter and an addictive Nam Jim Jaew dipping sauce. The Hi So cocktail is a must try and the natural wine list is affordable, but only served by the bottle. Our favourite is the Lazarus Pulp Orange. Visit 2 Bulan for lunch and you will want to come back for dinner.

Average Spend – IDR 250.000 ++ per person.

Location: Jl. Nyuh Bulan, Mas, Kecamatan Ubud, Kabupaten Gianyar, Bali 80571

They also have amazing cocktail list at one o f the best Thai restaurants in Ubud.

Warung Siam – Small Warung with Big Flavours.

Why do we love it?

If you love warungs in Ubud but want to experience something beyond Balinese / Indonesian cuisine, then Warung Siam with its Thai dishes is the perfect spot to visit. Located in the walking Jalan Goutama street that is home to some of the best bars in Ubud, this small warung is also the perfect pit stop to soak up all the libations. Established as one of the first Thai restaurants in Ubud, the decor will remind you of the numerous street side Thai eating houses in Bangkok. Grab a seat by the street and indulge in some fiery and flavourful dishes while people watching. Its hot, it’s loud, it’s fun – just as a Thai dining experience should be.

What to Order?

The menu is straightforward and there is something for everyone. We love their Green Curry with Chicken and Black Pepper Pork. The Pad Thai is the safe bet if you just want a quick bite and want to continue your shopping streak in central Ubud. Pair these with their passionfruit soda or Thai ice tea.

Average Spend: IDR 150.000 ++ per person.

Location: Warung Siam, Ubud, Gianyar Regency, Bali 80571

Warung Siam is keeping traditional Thai cooking at the centrestage here.

Best Thai Restaurant In Canggu:

Flavours of Ban – Modern Thai

Why do we love it?

There is only one place to visit in Canggu if you are craving Thai food and that is Flavours of Ban. Opened about a year ago, we were lucky to visit them in their first month and it’s safe to say that they are setting the bar high in Canggu for Thai food. You are greeted by the kitchen team and the open kitchen upon entering the sound of coals and smell of smoke lingers as you make your way to the dining area. The chef/owner is grilling and tossing aromatics on the wok and the front of house is welcoming and attentive and not shy of recommending their favourites.

What to Order?

You are greeted by an open kitchen & the chefs upon entering. The crackles of coal & lingering smoke follows you as you make your way to the dining area. The front of house is welcoming and attentive. They’re happy to recommend their personal favourites.

Best Thai Restaurants in Seminyak:

Fu House – Thai inspired Grill

Why do we love it?

Walk into Fu house and you are in for a treat. A retro-urban fitout, an open kitchen at the back, a steal-worthy playlist and a menu that boasts of Thai flavours without wanting to be ‘authentic’ or any other marketing gimmick that most restaurants apply to Thai food. The restaurant has a second floor that is ideal for group / private dinners but whether you are on a date or on a night out with friends, we recommend sitting by the bar and catching in on all the happenings of what turns out to be an eventful dining experience.

What to order?

Their menu is Thai inspired and you will taste a touch of fire in pretty much anything you order. We started with the beef doughnuts and the green papaya salad and followed it with the kingfish sashimi and charred tomato. The lamb Penang curry paired well with the scallion pancake and the coconut custard for dessert is mandatory. Fu house is definitely one of the best Thai restaurants in Bali.

Average Spend: IDR 500.000 ++ per person.

Location: Jl. Petitenget No.123 X, Seminyak, Kec. Kuta Utara, Kabupaten Badung, Bali 80361

Urban fair meets a hip ambience at Fu House!

Manaw Thai – Contemporary Thai

Why do we love it?

If contemporary Thai food is all about using local produce to create rich Thai flavours, then the recently opened Manaw perfectly hits that brief. Riding the wave of the global modern / contemporary Thai cuisine, Manaw, like Fu House and 2 Bulan, is not trying to follow the ‘Authentic Thai’ script. There are familiar Thai flavours with some novel use of ingredients. The cocktail list is well balanced and perhaps the best beer list on the island.

What to order?

The pomelo salad and the oysters are a must try to start with. For a fiery craving, we suggest ordering the chilli eggplant stir fry followed by the duck leg red curry. Wash them down with a Kura Kura Easy Ale craft beer. And if you left no room for dessert, visit again for the Thai sweet Cassava.

Average Spend: IDR 400.000 ++ per person.

Location: Jl. Petitenget No. 19 Seminyak, Denpasar, Kerobokan Kelod, Kec. Kuta Utara, Kabupaten Badung, Bali 80361

Manaw is hands down one of the best restaurants in Seminyak!

Special Mentions

Warung Longlay (Sanur).

Warung Longlay has been one of our best discoveries when we visit the night markets in Sanur. This tiny hole in the wall packs a punch with a small but bold Thai menu. Pull up some of the makeshift chairs & tables and order the pad kra pao, som tam and fried rice and you are in for a treat. Longlay is where you will find travellers, expats, the locals, the passers-by all coming together to enjoy one of the hidden gems of Thai food in Bali.

Average spend: IDR 100.000 ++ per person.

Location: Jl. Danau Buyan No.38, Sanur, Denpasar Selatan, Kota Denpasar, Bali 80227

A hidden gem in Sanur!

Nat Nat (Amed)

If you are up in the remote parts of North Bali and the Thai food craving kicks in, then look no further than Nat Nat. Run by a Thai-Indo family, the dishes will take you back to the streetfood of Bangkok. The fried chicken wings are loaded with chilli and garlic with a delicious sweet and sour dipping sauce. Pair these with a Bintang and you might not come across a better fried chicken & beer combination anyplace else.

Average spend: IDR 100.000 ++ per person.

Location: Purwakerti, Abang, Karangasem Regency, Bali 80852
